Adobe is making AI-assisted design more interactive. With its latest update to the Adobe integration in ChatGPT, users can combine natural-language prompts with hands-on editing controls to refine images, designs and PDFs without constantly switching between applications.
From AI prompts to precise editing
The updated image editor, powered by Photoshop and Adobe Express, allows users to select a specific object or brush over an area and request targeted changes. Interactive controls for adjustments such as hue, saturation, brightness and contrast then help users fine-tune the results.
For example, a designer could ask ChatGPT to remove an unwanted object from a product photograph, select the product and adjust its brightness to achieve the desired visual effect.
PDFs become interactive, too
The integration also brings Acrobat editing capabilities into ChatGPT. Users can revise text, highlight important passages and use selected sections of a PDF to guide further conversations. This can be useful when reviewing documents, analysing information or identifying related passages.
What does this mean for designers?
The most significant development is the combination of AI-assisted creation and human-controlled refinement. Instead of relying entirely on prompts, designers can move between describing an intended outcome and adjusting specific details themselves.
For design learners and creative professionals, this is an important workflow to explore. AI can accelerate routine edits and experimentation, while design knowledge remains essential for judging composition, colour, visual hierarchy and the quality of the final output.
These integrations complement rather than eliminate the need for dedicated creative applications. When projects require advanced compositing, detailed layer management or pixel-level control, working directly in Photoshop and other Adobe applications remains valuable.
Availability: Adobe announced a global rollout of these updated experiences on ChatGPT web and app on 29 September 2026. Actual access may depend on rollout status and account availability.
